Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Massimo Palombella

Masaccio, Trinità (1425-27), affresco nella Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, Firenze

Today’s celebration, inviting us to reflect on the identity of God, leads us to dwell on our identity as created in the image of God.

The Christian God is a relationship of love in freedom. Our being in relationship, our need to love and be loved, our freedom that allows us to self-determination beyond any ideological grand puppet master, are those constitutive data of our existence. In essence they tell of our being in the image of God. These profound and constitutive characteristics are given to us and it is our task to make them grow, personalise them, appropriate them so that our humanity can live fully. We cannot renounce relationships, loving, we cannot deprive ourselves of freedom through those small and big choices that slowly mould our true face, that face that will be our identity forever, beyond time and space.

The Offertory Antiphon of today’s Celebration is taken from the book of Tobiah (cf. Tb 12:6) with the following text:
“Benedictus sit Deus Pater, unigenitusque Dei Filius, Sanctus quoque Spiritus,
quia fecit nobis cum misericordiam suam.”

(Blessed be God the Father, and the only begotten Son of God, and the Holy Spirit;
for he has dealt with us according to his mercy).

The attached music, in Gregorian Chant, is taken from the Graduale Triplex published in Solesmes in 1979. The music track can be found on YouTube, where there is no indication of interpretation.

A blessed Sunday and heartfelt greetings.
